An Odd Form Of Flattery

I think that if someone is going to copy your work to their own blog then the least they might do is provide a link to the original source … oh wait, no the least they might do is spell your name right.

  1. You have it wrong, David. *Imitation* is a form of flattery (indeed, the sincerest form). Stealing your work as this guy has done is just theft, plain and simple.

I can never honestly work out why anyone would bother to go to all the effort of setting up a blog only to fill it with other people’s articles. Apart from moral bankruptcy, it’s just a monumental waste of time!

  2. I’m guessing that this was emailed to Laks and he posted it without adding anything extra. He could have just put a link to your blog. That would have been simpler.

  3. David,

I’m intrigued. Have you raised this with him? Did he respond? Will he go away, embarassed beyond belief?

    I guess not.

    Cheers,

    Doug

  4. HJR, Gandolf, I find nothing to disagree with there at all.

Pete, since I posted that the hit counter on the linked blog has doubled, so I guess he’d notice eventually. Maybe.

  5. You would not believe how many times I’ve seen sites that take postings from asktom – global change my

and repost it as if they wrote it, no link back, no indication where the original material comes from.

It usually takes only one or two emails to get that to change – but not always…

  6. Hey Mr. Albridge. It was a great article, I remember that one. Anyway, he did try to give you credit, and it looks like he’s pretty new to this blogging thing, so give him a break. I have to agree with Howard though, what was the point to that unless he had something to say or add in response?

  7. JH — I regard my theme as a Poison Pill. Copy it at your own risk. Actually I think it is just a standard blogger template. If I could change the green to a nice bath sponge yellow I would do, but this CSS stuff is beyond me.

TK — name and shame, I say. Perhaps a new thread listing all the places and people who have ripped off your work?

RV — well that’s a whole can of worms right there. Sometimes I imagine drawing a diagram of all the inter-blog commenting that goes on, and it wouldn’t be pretty. I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing mind, it just amuses.

  8. If you were, for example, to change the line ‘background: #692′ in the “body” section of your cascading style sheet to, instead, ‘background : #E1E12D’, you’d see a yellowing of the site.

However, that bit of the CSS also tells me that you have a green shadow graphic linked from http://www.blogblog.com (did you know your site was doing that?), so you might want to download the graphic to your own website, and before linking to its new URL, use something like the GIMP or Photoshop to change its hue/saturation so that you yellow it up a bit to match.

You should probably search the rest of the stylesheet for ‘692’, and do a global replace to E1E12D, too. After that, it’s just fine-tuning things.

  9. Hi David,
My sincere apologies for not getting your name right.
I express my sincere apologies here.
    I would correct it asap.
I am an newbie and upcoming Oracle DBA and would have been extremely happy if you could have mailed me about my mistake.
Pls correct me if you have any concerns in sharing your good article with my friends.
I would make sure that this doesn’t happen and put links to your source.

    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Laks

  10. Agreed and mistake is mine(Just i was little careless in not adding your source, possibly few lines about why i thought it was too good and finally could have atleast spelt your name right)
I make a point not to put any articles from here or any other source in future and only those i write or have written in the past.
Anyway Thanks for pointing out my mistake(though a little harsh i feel)

    regards
    Laks
